For more than two centuries, Fort George has stood watch over the waterfront in George Town, serving as one of the Cayman Islands’ most important historic landmarks. Built in the late eighteenth century from local coral rock and limestone, the small fort formed part of Cayman’s coastal defences during a time when the Caribbean was shaped by rival European powers and the constant threat of attack from the sea.
Although modest in size, Fort George played an important role in protecting the island’s harbour. Cannons once overlooked the coastline, ready to defend the settlement if needed, while the fort itself became a symbol of the determination of early Caymanians to safeguard their community. As the years passed and the threat of invasion faded, the fort remained a familiar landmark overlooking the growing town of George Town.
During the Second World War, Fort George found a new purpose. Members of the local Home Guard used the area to watch the surrounding waters, keeping a lookout for enemy submarines that were known to operate in the Caribbean. A towering silk cotton tree growing within the fort became an observation point, continuing the site’s long tradition of protecting the island from threats arriving by sea.
By the 1970s, Fort George faced a different danger. As George Town developed, parts of the historic structure were demolished during nearby construction work. Concerned Caymanians came together to protect what remained, standing in front of the ruins to prevent further destruction. Their efforts helped save the fort and highlighted the growing importance of preserving Cayman’s heritage.
Today, Fort George stands not only as a reminder of the Islands’ colonial past, but also as a symbol of the community’s commitment to protecting its history for future generations.
