Esterley “Pete” Tibbetts was one of the dedicated public servants who helped build the foundations of modern Cayman through decades of work behind the scenes. As Deputy Chief Engineer in the Public Works Department, he played an important role in developing the roads, bridges, drainage systems and public buildings that supported the Islands during a period of rapid growth and transformation.
When Tibbetts began his career, Cayman was very different from the country we know today. Many roads were still unpaved, communities were separated by long journeys, and essential infrastructure was only beginning to expand to meet the needs of a growing population. The work of the Public Works Department was vital, improving transportation, supporting new schools and government buildings, and helping connect communities across Grand Cayman.
Although his name may not have appeared in newspaper headlines as often as politicians or community leaders, Tibbetts earned the respect of colleagues throughout the Civil Service for his professionalism, technical expertise and commitment to public service. After many years of dedicated work, he retired as Deputy Chief Engineer and was honoured alongside other senior civil servants in recognition of his contribution to the development of the Cayman Islands.
Like many of the engineers, builders and tradespeople of his generation, Pete Tibbetts left a legacy that can still be seen every day. The roads people travel, the public facilities they use and the infrastructure that supports modern life were built through the efforts of individuals like him, whose work often went unnoticed but proved essential to the country’s progress.
Today, Esterley Tibbetts Highway recognises a man whose career was devoted to building the Cayman Islands, quite literally laying the groundwork for the communities and connections that continue to serve the nation today.
