Standing in the heart of George Town, the Cayman Islands National Museum occupies one of the oldest public buildings in the Cayman Islands. Constructed in the 1830s, the building has served many purposes throughout its long history, reflecting the changing needs of the Islands as they grew from a small seafaring community into the modern nation we know today.
Originally built as one of George Town’s first public buildings, it has housed the Islands’ first courthouse, jail, post office, government offices and even a public library. For generations of Caymanians, it was the centre of civic life, where justice was administered, official business was conducted, and important decisions affecting the Islands were made. Its location beside the harbour meant it was often one of the first buildings seen by visitors arriving by sea.
As Cayman developed, many historic buildings disappeared to make way for modern construction. Recognising the importance of preserving this unique landmark, the building was carefully restored and transformed into the Cayman Islands National Museum. In 1990, it officially opened as a museum dedicated to protecting and sharing the Islands’ cultural and natural heritage.
