During the period when Bodden Town served as Cayman’s capital, the Guard House formed part of the settlement’s early system of defence, providing a base for the local militia and helping protect a community that was then at the centre of government and trade.
Historical records refer to a Guard House in Bodden Town as early as the 1830s. Tradition holds that the site was one of the former capital’s lines of defence against pirates and Spanish marauders approaching the island.
The Guard House was believed to have been manned mainly at night by members of the local militia. Their weapons would have been simple by modern standards, including cannons, muskets, swords and whatever other arms were available. The position also provided a useful vantage point from which anyone approaching the settlement by land or sea could be observed.
Research has suggested that a wattle-and-daub building once stood just west of the present site and may have been the original Guard House structure. Although the exact boundaries of the historic site are uncertain, its location at the western approach to Bodden Town made it well placed to monitor movement towards the settlement.
The cannons displayed at Guard House Park today are not the original weapons associated with the site. They were recovered from the Wreck of the Ten Sail in East End, donated by residents of Gun Bay and installed at Guard House in 1991 as part of efforts to enhance the historic site.
The property was donated to the National Trust by the Crown in 1994 and later refurbished with improved landscaping, signage and visitor facilities.
Today, Guard House Park preserves the memory of a period when Bodden Town stood at the centre of Cayman’s political and commercial life. Its history reflects the way early Caymanian communities organised to protect themselves at a time when there was little formal military presence in the Islands.
