For nearly three decades, Rev. Joseph Stephen Blackman served the people of West Bay with compassion, faith and unwavering dedication. Arriving in the district in 1910, he became much more than a church minister. During a time when life in Cayman was centred around the sea, he offered comfort and support to families whose loved ones spent months away on dangerous voyages.
Many men from West Bay earned their living aboard turtling schooners and merchant vessels, often sailing far from home with no way of communicating until they returned. Before each voyage, Rev. Blackman would gather the captains and crews to pray for their safety, committing them to God’s protection before they set sail. On Sundays, while the men were still at sea, church services included special prayers for those who were away, ensuring they remained close to the hearts of their families and community.
His ministry extended far beyond the pulpit. Rev. Blackman worked closely with young people through Christian Endeavour groups, organised prayer meetings and encouraged a strong sense of fellowship within the district. During times of hardship, including the uncertainty of the First and Second World Wars, he provided reassurance and hope to a community that often relied on faith to overcome the challenges of daily life.
Travel around Grand Cayman was difficult in those years, with many journeys made on foot or by boat, yet Rev. Blackman remained a constant presence among the people he served. His kindness, leadership and devotion left a lasting impression on generations of West Bay families.
Today, Reverend Blackman Road honours a man whose greatest legacy was not a building or a public office, but the comfort, guidance and strength he gave to his community through a lifetime of faithful service.
